Southeast Raleighs Phillip Shuler is the only undefeated wrestler on this years All-Metro wrestling team, which is highlighted by five state champions and eight more who placed second or third in the N.C. High School Athletic Association individual state championships.
Shuler didnt win a single match as a freshman. He blamed himself for not being able to wrestle his junior year, saying he did something stupid, but he worked hard in the offseason. He didnt think he would become the programs second state champion.
Ive been through so much, Shuler said. Its quite a journey.
Cary, Carrboro, Northern Durham and Orange all had multiple wrestlers on the list, and no wrestler on the list has more than five losses.
One wrestler from each of the 14 weight classes was selected along with two wild cards.
Josh Brown, Northern Durham, 106 pounds, Sr: 4A state champ finished with a 57-3 record
Darius Dunn, Corinth Holders, 106 pounds, Jr.: Was fourth in 2A with 58-4 overall mark.
George Carpenter, Carrboro, 113 pounds, Jr.: Schools first state champion won 2A title at 35-4.
Stephen Dreher, Carrboro, 120 pounds, Jr.: Finished runner-up in 2A and posted 25-5 record.
Will Clark, Cary, 126 pounds, So.: Only loss was in the state semifinals, finished third in 4A with 51-1 record.
Alex Ynoquio, Cary, 132 pounds, Sr.: Was fourth place in 4A with a 47-3 record.
Jack Twomey-Kozak, Orange, 138 pounds , Sr.: Was the 3A runner-up, ended year 31-3.
Javon Johnson, Holly Springs, 138 pounds, Sr.: 4A runner-up posted 53-2 record this year.
Anderson Pope, Orange, 145 pound s, Sr.: Was third place in 3A and 43-5.
Rodney Shepard, Northern Durham, 152 pounds, Sr.: N.C. State recruit won 4A title with 59-1 record.
D avid Peters-Logue, Orange, 160 pounds, Jr.: One of Oranges four 3A runners-up, had 43-4 record.
LeVincent Clark, Southeast Raleigh, 170 pounds, Sr.: Ended year with 31-2 mark and was third place in 4A.
Aubrey Browning, Orange, 182 pounds, Sr.: Was second place in 3A and had 19-3 mark.
Jake Castagnero, Apex, 195 pounds, Sr.: Came back from injury to win 4A title and was 26-1.
Corey Daniels, Cary, 220 pounds, Sr.: Was fifth place in 4A, closing year with 28-4 mark.
Phillip Shuler, Southeast Raleigh, 285 pounds, Sr.: Undefeated at 39-0; won the 4A title with a pin.
