Southeast Raleigh’s Phillip Shuler is the only undefeated wrestler on this year’s All-Metro wrestling team, which is highlighted by five state champions and eight more who placed second or third in the N.C. High School Athletic Association individual state championships.

Shuler didn’t win a single match as a freshman. He blamed himself for not being able to wrestle his junior year, saying he “did something stupid,” but he worked hard in the offseason. He didn’t think he would become the program’s second state champion.

“I’ve been through so much,” Shuler said. “It’s quite a journey.”

Cary, Carrboro, Northern Durham and Orange all had multiple wrestlers on the list, and no wrestler on the list has more than five losses.

One wrestler from each of the 14 weight classes was selected along with two “wild cards.”
