Betty Carroll Stephenson

April 3, 2013

Mrs. Betty Carroll Stephenson, age 78, died Monday at Hospice House of Wake County in Raleigh. Funeral services will be 11:00AM Friday at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. Dr. Duane Hix. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Stephenson was born November 22, 1934 in Johnston County to the late John Ray and Agnes Jones Carroll, the eldest of four siblings. A lifelong musician, Mrs. Stephenson served as pianist and organist for White Memorial Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. Her close relationship with the church helped develop her musical gifts. As a young newlywed, Mrs. Stephenson was asked by Miss Kitty Stephenson to learn piano for services, and was later helped by Miss Kitty to purchase her first piano. This began a lifelong legacy of making and enjoying music, both secular and devotional. While she had a lengthy list of favorite hymns, her family will also fondly recall her love for Elvis Presley.

An avid and talented gardener, Mrs. Stephenson also had a joyous appreciation for the natural world. She loved growing plants around her Willow Springs home and watching nearby birds and wildlife. She could always keep you up to date on the hummingbirds outside her kitchen window. In her professional life, Mrs. Stephenson worked as a bank teller with CCB and Centura Banks for 25 years, a wonderful outlet for her knack for numbers and her kind personality.

Her greatest joy in life was her large family. She married Thomas Lee Stephenson in 1950 and raised their three daughters with him until his death in 1984. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and could always be heard proudly telling stories of their accomplishments. She was dearly loved and her gentle manner and loving heart will be sorely missed. She leaves a legacy of deep and abiding love for family and the community with whom she shared her many gifts.

Surviving are daughters & sons-in-law, Sherry & Danny Clifton of Benson, Vicki & Joe Hatch of Virginia Beach, VA, and Tracey Stephenson of Benson; two brothers; one sister; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends at White Memorial Presbyterian Church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

Flowers are welcomed; however, memorials may be made to The Betty C Stephenson Memorial Music Fund, White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1459 White Memorial Church Road, Willow Spring, NC 27592.
