2 men found dead in what deputies describe as a murder-suicide

— Johnston County sheriff’s deputies, who arrived at a double-wide mobile home early Friday afternoon, found one man dead outside the home and a second man lying on the bed of a utility trailer, unconscious but breathing.

Mortally wounded, the unconscious man later died at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield.

Investigators think the deaths reported at 1:41 p.m. were the result of a murder-suicide at 120 Hillcrest Road, near Packing Plant and Galilee roads, just outside of Smithfield, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Tammy Amaon.

“There was a 911 call indicating there was a murder-suicide at that address,” Amaon said late Friday afternoon.

The names of the two men were being withheld pending notification of their next of kin. Sheriff’s deputies have not yet said how they died or how the two men knew each other.

Neighbors in the community said the men died as a result of gunshot wounds. One resident said the man found in the utility trailer owns the mobile home and lived there with his wife and daughter.

“He was quiet. He always said ‘howdy’ to his neighbors,” said Louise Carter, who lives in the neighborhood. “I never had no issues with him. He never bothered no one.”
