CHAPEL HILL — A man who had been wounded in a shootout in Southern Pines has escaped from the UNC Hospitals trauma center, where he was under guard because he had outstanding warrants, police said Saturday.
Law enforcement from several agencies are looking for Larry Alexander Leverette, 21, who eluded UNC police while recovering from three gunshot wounds to his torso and one to his left arm.
He fled the hospital about 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Investigators think he might have escaped from the hospital grounds in a red Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was found at 2 p.m. in the Brookside Park Apartment complex in Southern Pines.
Leverette is described as black, 5-feet-10, 300 pounds with dreadlocks.
About 1:30 p.m. Friday, Southern Pines police responded to a call of someone with a weapon at the apartment complex. They found Leverette when they arrived, and had him airlifted to Chapel Hill.
A second gunshot victim was taken by private vehicle to Moore County Regional Hospital. Investigators think Leverette and the other person, whose name has not yet been released, knew each other and may have been fighting. Two semi-automatic handguns were recovered, police said.
About 10 p.m. Friday, a fire broke out at the apartment complex. The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with determining how that fire started, and whether it is connected to the shootings.
