Champion filly Beholder took the lead out of the gate and went on to control the pace in winning Saturday's $300,000 Santa Anita Oaks for 3-year-old fillies.
Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Beholder broke sharply from the far outside post to take the lead at the start. The filly, winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, never allowed any of her five rivals to offer any serious challenge in the 1 1/16-mile stakes.
The 3-10 favorite posted a three-length victory over Iotapa with Fiftyshadesofhay finishing third. Getting fourth was Spellbound followed by Could Be Trouble and Black Witch.
Beholder covered the Oaks distance in 1:43.16 on a fast track.
Trained by Richard Mandella, the filly added $180,000 to her bankroll. She notched her fifth win in eight career starts for owner Spendthrift Farm with earnings of $1,575,000.
Beholder made her 2013 debut on Jan. 21 with a second-place result as the 1-5 favorite in the Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita, losing by three-quarters of a length to Renee's Titan. The Eclipse Award winner bounced back on March 2 with a 3 3/4-length win at Santa Anita in the Las Virgenes Stakes.
Beholder returned $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10. Iotapa paid $7.80 and $3.80, and Fiftyshadesofhay paid $2.10 to show.
