Beck, Tar Heels win Irish Creek

— Kennesaw State’s Jimmy Beck rediscovered his putting game at the right time, using it to win the individual title Sunday at the 16th-annual Irish Creek Collegiate men’s golf tournament.

Beck shot a 3-under-par 68 Sunday at The Club at Irish Creek’s par-71 course. He finished with a three-round total of 8-under 205, one shot ahead of Charlotte’s Franco Castro.

North Carolina edged ACC rival N.C. State to win the team title for the third time. The Tar Heels finished 7-over-par 859, two ahead of the Wolfpack (861).

Kennesaw State and Charlotte tied for third at 866, with Davidson and UNC Wilmington tied for fifth at 869.

North Carolina’s Michael McGowan finished third at 211, with Davidson’s Richard Fountain – the leader after Saturday’s first two rounds – finishing in a five-way tie for fourth with N.C. State’s Albin Choi, North Carolina’s Andy Sajevic, UNC Wilmington’s Payne McLeod and Richmond’s Daniel Walker (212).
