I read “Congress needs a big, fat pay raise” (April 3) understanding that the author had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. It was an April Fool’s Day joke, wasn’t it?
I only wish the author had included a few more reasons why legislators are underpaid: Although they are elected to do the people’s business, in recent years many of them ran for office only to push a personal ideological or religious agenda. Congress members meet only about three days a week; they refuse to bring legislation to the floor for discussion; they take frequent and extended recesses; they spend a great portion of their time raising money for re-election; and our tax dollars pay for their superb health care and extravagant retirement packages.
Yes, indeed, these legislators need more money so they will be able to work harder!
