Dying man told police he killed acquaintance who got him addicted to crack cocaine

From staff reportsApril 9, 2013

— A Smithfield man told a detective that he killed a man who he claimed got him hooked on crack cocaine, according to a Johnston County sheriff’s spokeswoman.

The man then turned the gun on himself and later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities reported.

Tammy Amaon, the sheriff’s spokeswoman, said that according to a search warrant made public Tuesday at the Johnston County Clerk of Courts Office, Craig Baker claimed he shot Lucas Lorenzo Benton, 32, of Four Oaks, “because he got him addicted to crack.”

“He told that to a detective before he was transported to the hospital,” Amaon said Tuesday.

Someone called 911 on Friday afternoon to report a murder-suicide at Baker’s home at 120 Hillcrest Road, just outside of Smithfield, Amaon said.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found Benton dead in the yard behind a parked car. Investigators found Baker lying atop a utility trailer in the yard.

Emergency workers transported him to Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield, where he later died.
