Raleigh man dies after falling beneath bus wheels near NCSU campus

— A man who apparently had been drinking stumbled into the side of a Capital Area Transit bus Tuesday night on Enterprise Street near Hillsborough Street and died when he was run over by the rear wheels, police said.

Jeffery Wayne Powers, 55, of 200 Snow Ave. was on the east side of Enterprise Street near an entrance to the parking lot for Sadlack’s Heroes as the northbound bus was passing just after 9:30 p.m., according to a report from police accident investigators.

Witnesses told police that Powers fell into the side of the bus and then went under its right rear wheels.

Powers was taken to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, where he died.

The bus had six passengers aboard at the time.

The passengers and the bus driver, Calvin Jones, were unhurt.

Police estimated the bus was going about 5 mph when Powers fell under it.

According to the police report, Powers appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, and authorities ordered tests to determine that.
