I-85 southbound lanes opened after truck crash

From staff reportsApril 11, 2013

Traffic is pushed left as it approaches Avondale Drive on southbound Interstate 85 in Durham on Thursday morning.

— A tractor-trailer hauling produce overturned after crashing into another truck on southbound Interstate 85 near Avondale Drive (Exit 178) early Thursday, closing all lanes but the left shoulder for a time while workers unloaded the trailer by hand and then hampering traffic to various degrees until about 10:30 a.m.

The accident, which sent the truck driver to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, happened about 1:30 a.m., the state Department of Transportation said.

Cleanup workers were unloading the trailer by hand five hours later, and righting the truck had to wait until they finished, police said.

The truck was hauled off the highway about 10:30 a.m. after one last closure of all southbound lanes because a wrecker had to pull the truck north on that side to the Club Boulevard exit.

The produce truck collided with what police described as a “small car carrier.”

The driver of that truck was treated at the accident scene by EMS medics.

The produce from the truck scattered over about a half-mile of the highway, police said.

Investigators had not determined if any charges would be filed, a spokeswoman said.
