Crafton Stanley Tart, Sr.

Mr. Crafton Stanley Tart, Sr., 91, of Dunn passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon at Harnett Woods Nursing & Rehab Center. He was born in Sampson County on September 3, 1921 to the late Jack and Lura Jackson Tart.

Crafton married his high school sweetheart, Esteline Elmore on September 6, 1942 in Dillon, SC., she was eighteen and he was twenty-one. They were married for seventy and a half years. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the Persian Gulf Command. After the war, he and Esteline owned and operated, “The Open Air Market” in Dunn for over thirty years. It was the first grocery store to be open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The store motto was “We may doze but never close”. He also was the owner of Leigh’s Hallmark of Clayton and Dunn for twenty years.

He was an active member of the Dunn Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award. He was a member of the Palmyra Masonic Lodge in Dunn and a member of the Sudan Temple in New Bern. He served on the Dunn City Council, and was mayor protem. He was also a member of Robert’s Grove OFWB Church.

A Funeral will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Lee’s Chapel OFWB by Rev. Ricky Warren, Rev. Philip Boykin and Rev. Fred Baker. Burial will follow in Williford/Lee’s Chapel Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Esteline of Dunn; two sons, Crafton Stanley Tart, Jr. and wife, Kimberly of Kernersville, Anthony Tart and wife, Linda of Lebanon, TN;, two daughters, Sharon Wood and husband, Larry of Garner, Debra Hamilton and husband, Wesley of Dunn; eight grandchildren, Christopher Wood and wife, Vicki, Jonathan Wood and wife, Maria, Bailey Murphy and husband Patrick, Clay Hamilton and wife Christie, Jill Wade and husband, Dean, Susan Johnson and husband, Aaron, Justin and Casey Tart; and ten great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home.
