Black Onyx, winner of the Spiral Stakes last month, worked out Saturday at Churchill Downs in advance of the Kentucky Derby on May 4.
Trained by Kelly Breen, Black Onyx went six furlongs in 1:25 with exercise rider Juan Bernardini in the saddle.
"He really looked good," Breen said. "I wasn't looking to go too fast and we kept him off the rail so he didn't get too eager. His last quarter (of a mile) was his best quarter and that's what we wanted. Weather permitting, he'll have a blowout next Saturday."
The colt, owned by Sterling Racing, has won three of five starts for $407,810.
