RALEIGH — More than 2,000 people hit the jackpot in the Carolina Pick 4 lottery game Saturday evening with a simple set of numbers: 2-2-2-2.
“Quads” – four identical numbers – are among the most popular combinations played in the Pick 4 game, and when they hit they hit big. Saturday night’s payout came to $7.4 million, just shy of the record payout of $7.5 million last August, when the winning numbers were 1-1-1-1.
By contrast, the payout for the Pick 4 evening drawing over the past three months averaged $66,898, said lottery spokesman Ryan Kennemur. During that time, the number of winning tickets for the evening drawing averaged 355, Kennemur said.
Altogether, 2,051 people picked 2-2-2-2 on Saturday night, and won either $5,000 or $2,500 depending on whether they paid $1 or 50 cents for their tickets. The odds of picking the correct Pick 4 numbers are 1 in 10,000.
Lottery officials expected unusual crowds of people cashing in their tickets Monday at its six regional offices, including on Yonkers Road in Raleigh. They reminded winners that they have 180 days to claim their prizes.
