David Perry: Poor policies

April 23, 2013

Poor policies,

not teachers

Terry Stoops in his April 23 Point of View commentary on teacher tenure cited several academic studies to promote his partisan viewpoint, but he seriously misstated when he referenced a National Council on Teacher Quality report to support his statement that “the overall quality of the state’s teacher workforce is alarmingly low.”

In fact, that study, the “2011 State Teacher Policy Yearbook,” and the follow-up “2012 State Teacher Policy Yearbook” explicitly considered and graded the state’s policies for teacher preparation, evaluation and retention and did not address the quality of the teaching force. This is an important distinction but one Stoops carelessly or willfully overlooks.
