Fuquay-Varina commissioner indicted on sex abuse charges

From staff reportsApril 25, 2013

— A Wake County grand jury has indicted Fuquay-Varina Commissioner James “Jim” Abernethy on two counts of indecent liberties with a child, a felony.

The charges were filed by the Wake County District Attorney’s Office following an investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, according to court records.

Abernethy, 50, faced public scrutiny after his wife Rhonda Abernethy requested and was granted an order of protection against him last May. She accused him of emotionally abusing her and having inappropriate contact with a teenager, according to court records.

After the restraining order was put in place, Jim Abernethy denied the allegations. He was not available for comment Wednesday.

According to civil records, Rhonda Abernethy alleges that in 2010 her husband took the teenager numerous times for overnight stays and began talking to her about sex and touching her backside.
