Fred Howes: An individual right

An individual right

Kudos to Dr. Welton Gaddy for his April 13 Point of View article “Time for a freedom of religion refresher.”

In the 1980s when I was active in vocation rehabilitation, I was asked to give the invocation at our annual meeting. Until that time, the prayers had always been given by local Protestant or Catholic ministers, which I always objected to as a member of the Community of Christ. My invocation was of a generic nature, allowing for the fact that some atheists present might have felt the prayer was inappropriate. At the end of the meeting, several members of the Jewish faith thanked me for a more general prayer to the creator of us all.

People of all faiths must be recognized as having the freedom to worship according to their own consciences, or for atheists to feel no need to worship. That is what our nation stands for. People who equate terrorists with the Muslim community do a disservice to all faiths who may believe differently from you or I.
