Frances Sanders Moorhead, 81, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2013 surrounded by her three daughters. Born in Gastonia, NC, on December 24, 1931, she was a beloved wife and mother who spent much of her adult life in Chapel Hill, NC. She was married for nearly 60 years to her high school sweetheart, Robert Burns Moorhead, who survives her, and was a wonderful mother to her daughters Lynn Morton (Ric Morton), Jane Lyonnais (Mike Lyonnais), and Becky McGrath (Scott McGrath) as well as the beloved grandmother of nine grandchildren.
Frances was a gifted elementary school teacher who began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Wadena MN in 1953 and ended it at Ephesus Elementary School in Chapel Hill in 1993. She was also a talented homemaker who did her best to pass along her vast knowledge of cooking, sewing, and gardening, to her three daughters, with varying success. Known for her wonderful sense of humor, Frances was still making her family and friends as well as the UNC Hospital staff laugh at the end of her life.
The family would like to especially thank the staff and caregivers at The Cedars Retirement Community, the DuBose Health Center at The Cedars, and the physicians and nurses at UNC Hospital.
A celebration of the life of Frances Moorhead will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2013 at Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, Chapel Hill, NC.
