WINSTON-SALEM — Grant Shambley hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 13th and Wake Forest topped visiting Elon 2-1 Tuesday night at Gene Hooks Field.
There was one out when Shambley drove in Brett Armour, who had reached base with a single and then advanced all the way to third on a wild pickoff attempt by Elon reliever Ryan Pennell.
Wake Forest (25-23) starter Jack Fischer went 61/3 innings and allowed just one run on four hits. Niko Spezial earned the win after entering in the 13th and pitching a 1-2-3 inning.
Elons (23-24) Nate Young was the man of the night for the Phoenix, pitching six innings in relief, giving up two hits and striking out nine.
The Deacons scored their first run of the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Joe Napolitano.
Elon tied the game in the seventh inning on a pinch-hit, RBI single by Danny Lynch
Joey Rodriguez was the only Wake Forest player with multiple hits, going 2-3 with an RBI. Andrew Williams had the only extra-base hit of the game for either team with a double.
Ryan Kinsella had two hits for the Phoenix.
Wake Forest and Elon play again tomorrow at Elon at 6:30 p.m.
