John Mavrovich: Yes to drug tests

Yes to drug tests

In reference to N.C. Senate Republicans’ requiring drug testing as a condition for receiving welfare benefits, an April 26 letter-writer cited “so little respect for poor people.”

If benefits are denied, welfare recipients have the ability to get their benefits when they can demonstrate they are drug free. The door to their benefits isn’t closed. Drug testing is now a condition of employment, and aren’t we hoping to get them on a path to becoming gainfully employed? Or should we continue to enable their drug habit with taxpayer funds?

Speaking of “respect,” how about a little bit of respect for taxpayers who are required to pay for this?
