Frank Konhaus: Newton lacks morals

Newton lacks morals

Lately each morning when I pick up The News & Observer I need to recheck the masthead to make sure I’m not reading The Onion. It would be comical if it weren’t so tragic to watch our Republican legislators vaulting us headlong into the previous century with each successively more ridiculous and regressive proposal.

So now Sen. E.S. “Buck” Newton of Wilson wants to deny the constitutional right to vote for felons who have served their time and paid their debt (“Ex-felons may have to wait to vote” April 23), and he wants to require affidavits from two registered voters to vouch for their “outstanding moral character.”

The latter requirement might prove more difficult for Newton.
