John A. Paar: Rise and shine

Rise and shine

A representative of the conservative group Americans for Prosperity was quoted in the May 14 article “More arrests on ‘Moral Monday’” as saying that the “soccer moms” in the suburbs would not be positively impressed by the demonstrations of representatives for the poor against the anti-labor, anti-public school, anti-unemployed, anti-Medicaid, anti-environment ramrod policies of the Republican legislature and governor.

Well, maybe it is time for the “soccer moms and dads” to wake up. The reverse Robin Hood politics may play well for a while to enrich the already wealthy, but in the long run, when there is great social inequality and injustice, we all lose. We all breathe the same air, look at the same landscapes and drink the same water, and injustice is the seedbed of social unrest and ultimately of increased crime and disorder.

We are seeing a wholesale slaughter of progressive policies meant for the common good, in favor of the most privileged among us. We can and must do better.
