Lilyan Vigo and Marcelo Martinez in Carolina Ballet's production of "Giselle."

Nineteenth-century story ballets are quite theatrical in their depiction of sorcerers and magical transformations, but their fairy-tale romances are usually two-dimensional. “Giselle” has a more realistic love story. An innocent peasant girl, wooed by a duke in disguise, is heartbroken when she finds he’s betrothed to another, then loses her sanity and dies of grief. Carolina Ballet’s dancers have honed their acting skills to bring emotional truths to their performances this weekend. Memorial Auditorium, Raleigh. 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday (also May 23 at Durham Performing Arts Center). $25-$66. 919-719-0900; carolinaballet.com.
