TEMPE, Ariz. — Senior Brinson Paolini fired a 2-under-par 68 to lead Duke to a 2-under 278 in the opening round of the NCAA Tempe regional at the par-70 Karsten Golf Course.
North Carolina is in a five-way tie for fourth at even-par.
The Blue Devils enter Fridays second round in second, 10 shots off the lead. Top-seed UCLA was 12-under Thursday to grab the tournament lead.
The Bruins pushed their lead late in the round by playing the par-5s, No. 14 & No. 17, at 10-under as a team.
Duke is a shot ahead of third place Austin Peay. Georgia, Texas A&M, Clemson and Central Florida are tied with UNC in fourth, followed by Vanderbilt (+3), Arizona State (+4), New Mexico State (+5), Kennesaw State (+8), Arizona (+12) and Lehigh (+21).
The top five teams as well as the top individual after 54 holes advance to the NCAA championship at Alpharetta, Ga., which begin May 28.
Dustin Korte (Austin Peay) and Pontus Widegren (UCLA) share the individual lead at 6-under. Greg Eason (Central Florida) is one shot back. Paolini is tied for sixth with UNCs Brandon Dalinka and nine other players.
N.C. State: The Wolfpack is in ninth place after firing a 1-over 289 during Thursdays opening round of the NCAA regional at the par-72 Golden Eagle Country Club at Tallahassee, Fla.
North Florida leads the field of 13 at 16-under (272), followed by Washington (-12) and host Florida State (-11). Oregon, Georgia Tech and South Florida are tied for fourth at 8-under. Wake Forest and Oklahoma are each at 4-under.
Oregon State is three shots behind N.C. State at 4-over. Iowa and San Diego at tied for 11th at 11-over. Loyola Maryland is last at 13-over.
North Floridas MJ Maguire holds a one-shot lead after shooting a 7-under 65. ACC champion Anders Albertson (Georgia Tech) and Chase Seiffert (Florida State) each fired a 66 on Thursday.
N.C. State junior Logan Harrell shot the only sub-par round of the day for the Pack. His 3-under 69 puts him in a tie for 14th. He was even at the turn, before rolling in three birdies for a 33 on the back nine.
Senior Mitch Sutton and sophomore William Herring are tied for 42nd at 1-over.
Junior Albin Choi and freshman Carter Page both shot identical rounds of 2-over and are tied for 49th. Choi had seven birdies, six bogeys, one triple bogey and four pars.
