Sally Berenson: Change brings peril

Change brings peril

The current legislature needs to recognize the reluctance of people to accept sweeping changes. Dwane Powell illustrated in the May 12 political cartoon that rocks lay ahead for this legislative session.

While speed to change is intoxicating, legislative members must remember that most people do not adapt to change easily. Their life experiences have taught them that too much change creates chaos. They are most uneasy and suspicious when change happens too quickly. People understand that speedy change may indicate a lack of thoughtfulness about the negative implications of the change. Suspicions as to the motive behind the rapid change may emerge.

I urge the legislative leadership to exercise caution and act on changes that preserve the values of our democracy while meeting the needs of the majority of the citizen of North Carolina.
