Wells' homer gives NC State opening win in NCAA softball regional

— Senior Bethaney Wells hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday, giving N.C. State a 2-0 softball victory over the James Madison in its NCAA Knoxville Regional opener.

It’s the first time in school history the Wolfpack (34-18-1), the ACC champion, has won its opening game in an NCAA regional. In 2006 and 2007, the Wolfpack lost its opener and won the second game in the loser’s bracket at Baton Rouge, La., and at Columbia, S.C., respectively.

The Wolfpack, which has won 13 in a row and 20 of its past 22, moves on to face No. 5 Tennessee on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Tennessee’s Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

Wells’ game-winning homer, banged over the right field wall and drove in senior Katie Mansilla, who was pinch running for freshman Hanna Sommer. Sommer drew a one-out walk ahead of Wells.

It was Wells’ eighth homer of the season and 30th of her career,
