Needham Sloan “N.S.” Stevens, Jr., age 85, of Stevens Sausage Road near Smithfield, died Saturday evening, May 18, 2013, at his home. Born in Johnston County on January 28, 1928, he was the son of Needham Sloan and Pauline Thompson Stevens. Mr. Stevens was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. Following his military service, he and his father founded Stevens Sausage Company, a company that he remained active in until his death. The business was recently recognized as Johnston County Agri-Business of the Year by the NC State Agriculture Department. Mr. Stevens was a charter member of the Smithfield-Selma Chamber of Commerce. He is a lifetime member of Smithfield First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 PM in Smithfield First Baptist Church with burial following in Sunset Memorial Park. Rev. Lee Colbert will officiate. The family will receive friends at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma Monday night from 6 to 8 PM.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years Carolyn Harris Stevens; sons, Mike and wife Neppie, Tim and wife Anita, David and wife Betsy, all of Smithfield; sisters Joyce Underwood of Raleigh, Alice Lee Adams of Rocky Mount, Louise Byrd of Panama City, Florida; grandchildren, Ellie Webb and husband Ben of Mount Airy, Sloan, Allison, Olivia, Whitley, Carrie and John Stevens, all of Smithfield; and one great grandchild Katherine Webb of Mount Airy.
