Raleigh woman killed in accident involving school bus

From staff reportsMay 22, 2013

— The driver of a car was killed Wednesday morning when she pulled in front of a Wake County school bus on Atlantic Avenue.

Lana Awni Almashini, 25, of Flint Ridge Place in Raleigh was attempting to make a left turn from Forest Oaks Drive onto northbound Atlantic Avenue when she turned in front of the southbound bus.

The bus was traveling about 45 mph when it hit Almashini’s car on the driver’s side and pushed it about 85 feet.

There were no children on the bus, which was starting a run for West Millbrook Middle School, according to the school system.

The driver of the bus, Octavius L. Smith, was not injured. Smith, 22, has worked for the school system since October.

The accident took place about 6:15 a.m. and forced police to close Atlantic between Spring Forest and Millbrook roads during most of the morning commute.
