Require interlock devices
Regarding the May 21 column “Is .05 level too low?”: I would question why the elephant in the room is never mentioned when we talk about alcohol-related traffic deaths.
The answer to this problem is to require an interlock device on all vehicles. We can provide all sorts of distractions (radio, satellite radio, disc players, TV screens and GPS), but we don’t address this epidemic except by penalizing everyone, which is, of course, the classic cop out. Enforce the laws (our repeat offender record is an insult to anyone injured or murdered by one of these drunks) and require that manufacturers provide an interlock. But of course our representatives do not have the courage to do the right thing.
