Karla Diener: Dream killers

Dream killers

The May 18 front page led with a headline that proclaimed our Powerball jackpot “allows people to dream.” What a deplorable shame that games of chance have replaced what were once realistic, achievable dreams for the future.

The dreams of hardworking, everyday residents of North Carolina are threatened by many factors, among them the loss of access to affordable healthcare and the rapidly rising costs of higher education. And those at the lower end of the income scale now face higher taxes in the form of a sales tax on food and medicine.

I won’t argue with those who label the lottery a “fool’s game” or an “idiot’s tax,” but let’s save the really choice names for a General Assembly that instead of enabling the dreams of the state’s citizens, actively thwarts them.
