Teenage escapee in Durham turns self in

May 26, 2013

A teenager who escaped Saturday afternoon from a youth home in the 2400 block of Broad Street has turned himself in, Durham County authorities said Sunday.

Identified only by his first name, Darren, and last name beginning with D, the youth scaled a fence and jumped off a roof at the Durham County Youth Home Saturday.

“Darren D. turned himself into the Durham County Youth Home only a few minutes ago,” a county spokesman said in a news release Sunday. “He was accompanied by his parents.”

The sheriff’s office will continue to look into the incident, with additional criminal charges related to his escape a possibility, the statement said.

Durham County said Saturday that authorities had a high degree of concern about the escapee and the public because of “the unpredictability of juvenile behavior during an escape.”

Dozens of police officers and dogs looked for the teenager Saturday afternoon and last night. Staff reports.
