South Mecklenburg forces Fuquay-Varina to Game 3

— A walk-off bunt is how South Mecklenburg has forced Fuquay-Varina to a Game 3 in today's N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A baseball championship series.

Fuquay-Varina fell 3-2, which means the two sides will play Game 3 starting at 4:30 p.m.

Garrett Suggs got the start on the mound for the Bengals (27-5) and for six innings, the southpaw shut out the South Meck (27-7) hitters.

But in the bottom of the seventh, South Meck's leadoff hitter reached on a D.J. Burt error at shortstop. It was Fuquay's first error of the game.

A single gave the Sabres runners on second and third with no outs, the batter reaching second on the outfield throw to third.

Fuquay brought in Brett Daniels, but South Meck won on back-to-back bunts by its eighth and ninth hitters. The first was a sacrifice bunt, the second died in front of the plate where Fuquay had no play to prevent the walk-off. Fuquay had taken a lead in the top of the 6th on sacrifice fly from Nick Stuart that scored Burt. Stuart had also saved a run in the the bottom of the second, throwing out a Sabres runner at the plate. In total, the Bengals left four runners in scoring position.
