Before his arrest in Durham on Wednesday night, North Carolina basketball player P.J. Hairston was driving a vehicle in which police discovered 43.2 grams of marijuana, according to a Durham Police Department incident report.
Police also discovered a handgun after they stopped Hairston and two passengers in a rented GMC Yukon. Police charged Hairston with misdemeanor drug possession and driving without a license.
It’s unclear whether the gun belongs to Hairston, and how much of the 43.2 grams of marijuana belonged to him. According to Kammie Michael, a spokesperson for the Durham Police Department, police discovered one bag of marijuana in the vehicle and one outside of it. Police discovered the gun outside of the vehicle.
“We are not saying it belongs to Hairston,” Michael wrote in an email. “I am not sure the owner has been identified. It was found outside the vehicle. It was not found on Hairston.”
According to the incident report, police stopped Hairston and two passengers at 10:20 p.m. on Wednesday during a license checkpoint at 1499 Holloway Street in Durham. Police during the stop discovered marijuana, a 9mm handgun, a magazine with nine rounds of ammunition, plastic baggies, three cigars and a rental car agreement.
Hairston is due to appear in district court on Aug. 6.
Hairston’s passengers, Miykael Faulcon and Carlos Sanford, were also both charged with possession of marijuana.
Faulcon is a rising sophomore basketball player at Elizabeth City State. He is from Durham. Faulcon was charged in May 2011 with loitering in Wake County. He was charged in March 2011 in Brunswick County with assault on a female. Both charges were dismissed.
Hairston was the Tar Heels’ leading scorer during his sophomore season. After considering entering the NBA draft, he decided to remain in school.
Steve Kirschner, a spokesman for the North Carolina men’s basketball team, said on Friday the university was still gathering facts surrounding Hairston’s arrest and that it wasn’t prepared to comment.
