Moran named first-team All-America; Two from NC State picked for third-team

— North Carolina junior Colin Moran was the only player from the Carolinas selected first-team All-American by Baseball America, the magazine announced Wednesday.

Moran, who hit .348, led the nation with 86 RBIs and hit 13 homers.

Elon first baseman Ryan Kinsella and second baseman Michael Bass of UNC Wilmington were the Carolinas’ only selections on second team.

Shortstop Trea Turner and left-hander Carlos Rodon of N.C. State were picked for the third team.


Duke: Mike Krzyzewski, the winningest coach in the history of NCAA Division I men’s basketball, was honored as the recipient of the Dick Enberg Award, presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

• Krzyzewski received an Honorary Alumnus Award from the Duke Medical Center for his contributions to the Duke Children’s Health Center. Krzyzewski and his family have made the center a focal point in their efforts to raise the standard of clinical care for children.


East Carolina: The kickoff time for the Pirates’ season opener at home against Old Dominion has been set for 7 p.m. Aug. 31 to accommodate a live telecast.
