Patrick Corrigan: Speeding officers weren’t safe

Unsafe officers

Regarding the June 8 article “Officer’s speed in chase lawful; crash deemed ‘unavoidable’ ”: Why do we have speeding laws? Is it not to enhance the safety of our citizens? If so, then why would a police officer, even if it is legal, pursue another vehicle at 75 mph in a 35-mph zone with no lights or siren?

The two young men who were killed crossed a centerline and probably would have been killed no matter the speed. But eagerness to catch and condemn has its own traps. Excessive speeding by law enforcement officers without providing safe warning is one of them. And 75 in a 35 is excessive.
