Garner is 1 of 10 All-America City winners in U.S.

From staff reportsJune 16, 2013

It’s official: Garner is an All-America City.

The town’s winning bid to become one of 10 honorees, announced Sunday in Denver, was bolstered by civic projects such as construction of the Garner Veterans Memorial and its Community of Hope outreach program. And support from American Idol winner Scotty McCreery certainly didn’t hurt.

Garner’s video, in which McCreery is featured, also won the Most Viewed All America City Video award.

Included in Saturday’s presentation before the judges were the community’s response in blocking a proposed Triangle Expressway route through the city and successfully opposing the proposed closure of the local branch library.

The last Triangle community to win the All America City title was Durham in 1983.

The All-America City program is sponsored by the National Civic League based in Denver and is designed to reward citizen involvement, inclusiveness, collaboration and innovation in meeting community challenges and needs.
