John Ellis Hryharrow

June 20, 2013

John ("Jan") Ellis Hryharrow, a resident of Durham, North Carolina for over thirty years, died Monday, June 17, 2013, from complications following heart transplant surgery.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie Hamilton, two step-children, Sean Hamilton and Estelle Hamilton, of Durham; his mother, Ruby Ellis Hryharrow and his sister, Dale Friedman, both of Beaufort, SC; his brother, Danner Hryharrow of Atlanta, GA; four nephews, Gregory Hryharrow of Allentown, PA, Elliott Friedman of San Francisco, CA, Danner Friedman of Charleston, SC, and Porter Friedman of Portland, OR. Jan's beloved and constant canine companion, Gandalf, will continue to keep watch at the home for him.

Jan was a man of many interests: avid sailor and outdoorsman, automobile collector, Francophile, oenophile, accomplished chef, successful businessman, dog lover and conversationalist. Most importantly, he was a friend to many.

Jan lived a very full life; early in his career, he co-owned Sudi's, one of the first fine dining restaurants in Durham. Later, as a commercial real estate broker, developer and early property owner of downtown Durham, Jan was pleased to see his vision of downtown Durham come to fruition.

Jan was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Class of 1968. He was an officer in the United States Navy and a Viet Nam veteran.

The Friends of Nursing Program at Duke University Hospital is the charity of choice for any charitable donations in Jan's memory.

The memorial service will be held at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church, Beaufort, S.C. on June 22, 2013 at 11:00 AM. A Durham, N.C., memorial will be held at a later date.
