William DuPre: Leaving a legacy

Leaving a legacy

I was saddened to read of the death of former Republican Gov. Jim Holshouser (“Leader fueled a 2-party state” June 18).

I was sadder still when I read the tributes to his political skills and contributions: an “ability to work with Democrats and Republicans,” a “tough Republican” who nevertheless was “focused on trying to bring people together and build consensus.”

He was remembered for bringing health clinics to rural areas, bolstering public education and working to protect our environment.

Every politician needs to take the long view – the really long view – and stop to think: What will my obituary say about me?
