Hunter A. Poole Sr.: A special governor

A special governor

Instead of firing a lot of us Democrats, Gov. Jim Holshouser gently but firmly led our state and those of us fortunate enough to serve under his administration.

En route back from Japan on his last mission abroad he asked what I planned to do after his departure from office.

My reply was that I hoped to stay on with the Department of Commerce.

He replied, “I wouldn’t be to sure of that. We have become close. Maybe too close.”

We were close, and I cherish that for it isn’t often you can become friends with the sitting governor let alone become close.

James Holshouser was special to all of North Carolina.
