From staff reportsJune 25, 2013

— A Wake Forest man died early Tuesday when his car crashed in the 11000 block of Falls of Neuse Road as he fled from police.

Raleigh Police Department spokesman Jim Sughrue said a patrol officer was inbound on Falls of Neuse Road shortly after 2 a.m. when he saw a speeding vehicle in the outbound lanes.

The officer turned his marked patrol vehicle around and attempted to stop the speeding vehicle, but the driver pulled away at a high rate of speed, lost control, and crashed a short distance later.

Samuel Joseph Johnson, 23, of 8524 Falkirk Ridge Court, Wake Forest, who was alone in the car at the time, was declared dead at the scene, Sughrue said.

The investigation is continuing.
