Edith Grace York Crane

Edith Grace York Crane died peacefully in her sleep, June 28, 2013. She died as she lived, quietly. Edith was born January 24, 1930 in Chipley, FL to Avin Henry York and Viola Spooner York. She had two older brothers, Elbert and Huey, who affectionately called her “Sissy”. Her baby sister, Carolyn, was born eight years later. Edith grew up during the Great Depression and remembers getting electricity , which she recalled as the “grandest thing there was.” As a little girl she loved her roller skates and playing hop scotch. Her brothers would pay her a dime to do the dishes for them.

In 1951, Edith married Roscoe Kenneth Crane in Atlanta, GA. They moved to Fayetteville, NC with their four children and eventually built a home in Hope Mills.

She was a devoted wife and mother, serving her family and church faithfully. She loved cooking Southern meals for her family. Her fried okra was our favorite! She also fed and taught her family kindness, never speaking ill of anyone. The holidays were always spent around her dining room table, where homemade ambrosia, fudge, divinity and fruitcake were plentiful. The house was destroyed by fire, but the memories she made there live on.

During that fire, her little dog Honeybear was saved by the firemen. Edith loved her animals. For a short time she raised Great Danes. They were part of the family, sitting like people on the couch in the den.

Edith was a fighter. During her life, she overcame ovarian, esophageal, and breast cancer. She did this while also caring for Roscoe. She never complained, but quietly endured and lovingly cared for her husband until he died in 2000. She was the kindest, sweetest person we have ever known. She was, and is, our Angel Mother and Grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Kenneth Crane; and brothers, Elbert and Huey York of Pensacola, FL.

Edith is survived by her sister, Carolyn Bingham and her husband, Richard, her four children, and their spouses, Mike and Anna Crane, Susan Helmer, John and Gigi Crane, and Kay and Vince Moore. Ten grandchildren, Tracy Helmer Weymouth and husband John, Garrett and Brigette Poole Helmer, Blake and Rebekah Black Helmer, and Juli Helmer Kilgore and husband John. Also Kristen Moore Miller and husband, Jeremiah, Brett Moore, Mark Moore, and Matthew Moore, and Camilla Crane and Christina Crane. Also her fifteen great grandchildren, Johnny, Whitney, Emily Jane, and Blake Weymouth, Braden, Avery, Carson, and Davis Helmer, Logan, Zoe, and Evelyn Helmer, and Delaney, Mallory, Aubree, and Harrison Kilgore.

The funeral will be held at 2 pm, Friday, July 5, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 6528 Johnson Pond Road, Fuquay-Varina, with visitation from 1 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at 4:30 p.m. in Cumberland Memorial Gardens, 4509 Raeford Road, Fayetteville, NC.

Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to the SPCA of Wake County, 200 Pet Finder Lane, Raleigh, NC 27603.
