Dr. Mary Catherine Brake and Mr. Carl Albert Turner, Jr. were married June 29, 2013 at 6 o'clock in the evening in Beaufort, North Carolina. The Reverend Doctor John Check and The Reverend Caswell Shaw officiated the candlelight ceremony at Ann Street United Methodist Church. A reception hosted by the bride's parents followed at The Dunes Club in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Samuel Brake, Jr. of Beaufort, North Carolina and the granddaughter of Mrs. Louise Guthrie Thomas and the late Mr. Ralph Lester Thomas, Sr. of Beaufort, and of Mrs. Emma Stanton Brake and the late Mr. Joseph Samuel Brake, Sr. of Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Albert Turner, Sr. of Bachelor, North Carolina. He is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. Claude Taylor of Bachelor, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Thomas Turner of Raleigh.
The bride was escorted to the altar by her father and given in marriage by her parents. The matron of honor was Mrs. Joanna Brake Ragon of Virginia Beach, Virginia, sister of the bride. Other bridal attendants were Dr. Amanda Bailey of Little Rock, Arkansas; Mrs. Amber Ellis of Marion, North Carolina; Mrs. Elizabeth Govoni of Beaufort; Mrs. Virginia Thomas Shreve of Wilson, North Carolina; Mrs. Rebecca Turner of Grayslake, Illinois; and Ms. Laura Windley of Durham.
The best man was Mr. David Michael Freitag of Libertyville, Illinois, friend of the groom. Additional groomsmen were Mr. Claude Taylor Turner of Grayslake, Illinois, brother of the groom; Mr. David Taylor Britton of Morehead City, North Carolina; Mr. Charles Scott Lewis of Morehead City, North Carolina; LCDR Robert Tucker Ragon, USN, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Mr. Gerard Antoine Taylor of Washington, D.C.; and Mr. Robert Lewis Thomas of Raleigh.
Program attendants were Mrs. Hayes Jones of Arlington, Virginia; Ms. Mary Way of Los Angeles, California; and Miss Allison Kittrell of Beaufort. The wedding was directed by Mrs. Allison Bernauer of Beaufort. Music was provided by organist Mrs. Kandice Davis, trumpeter Mr. Joe McCreary, violinist Mrs. Darla Vick, flutist Mrs. Beth McCreary, and vocalist Ms. Emily Tucker.
The bride wore an off white royal satin and tulle A-line gown. The gown featured a strapless notched neckline with an asymmetrical rouched bodice. Covered buttons and an asymmetrical pickup accentuate the chapel train. The veil was a finger tipped tulle trimmed in off white satin. She carried a modified round bouquet of traditional white wedding flowers.
The bride graduated Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude from North Carolina State University, where she was a Caldwell Fellow. She received her medical degree at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, and completed residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, serving her final year as Chief Resident. She is employed as a physician in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics with ECU Physicians. She was presented at the 2000 North Carolina Debutante Ball hosted by the Terpsichorean Club of Raleigh.
The groom graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College, with a bachelor of science in biology. While at Wesleyan he was awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Mr. Turner began working for Abbott Laboratories, now Hospira, following graduation from college. After serving in several leadership capacities in Los Angeles and Chicago, he has returned to North Carolina and is employed with Hospira as Director of Supply Chain.
After a honeymoon trip to Kauai, Hawaii, the couple will reside in Greenville, North Carolina.
