Bob Endersby: New ‘winning’

New ‘winning’

Lance Armstrong’s recent claim in a sports story that it was “impossible” to win the Tour de France without doping in his era (“Armstrong mess haunts Tour” June 29) could forever redefine the term “winning” in sports or in all areas of life for that matter.

I don’t doubt for a moment the accuracy of Armstrong’s claim given the “win at all costs” mentality of society today.

The pressure of being a lone wolf, of having to swim upstream and finding all your competitors being graded on a curve can be enormous. But then again, who are we really trying to please in all our chosen endeavors? Perhaps “winning” will someday be defined as the one guy who played by the rules even though he finished the race in 72nd place!
