Nicholas Rupp: McCrory dodges abortion issue

July 3, 2013

McCrory the dodger

In the November 2012 election, I voted for Gov. Pat McCrory. I thought that he ran a positive campaign, and I believed he was a man of his word when he promised during his campaign that “he would not sign laws that further restrict abortions.”

Yet, on July 2 when the N.C. Senate approved the measure that would restrict abortions, the governor’s office was silent on the measure – saying that it had “no comment on the bill” (“Senate votes to curb abortion,” July 3 news story).

Perhaps the governor is trying to get off on a technicality, since he doesn’t have to sign this bill for it to become law as it is attached to another measure dealing with Islamic law. McCrory shouldn’t be given a hall pass to restrict abortions. I made a mistake voting for the governor. It won’t happen again.
