Pattie Hofland: Foreign affairs important

July 4, 2013

Important investments

It surprised me to see U.S. Rep George Holding’s July 2 letter “Obama’s costly trip to Africa” when he is on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and should understand the importance of good international relations. I have met Africans who are alive today because of the great programs the U.S. has invested in, such as PEPFAR and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

What confuses me is that Holding states that, “$100 million could pay the annual salary of more than 2,000 teachers in North Carolina or of the 22,000 civilian employees who were furloughed in the state due to defense cuts,” yet what has he done to help North Carolinians struggling to find work or feed their families?

Holding needs to stop being petty, recognize the importance of diplomacy and work with all members of government to help those who need it most.
