Philip Kray passed away peacefully on July 3 after a long battle with emphysema. He had successfully quit his life-long smoking habit four years ago.
Philip grew up in Lakewood, Ohio, and attended Ohio University. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea 1954 - 1956. He moved to Durham to be near family in 2005. Philip enjoyed baseball, birthdays, vanilla soft-serve ice cream, rides out in the country, and special gatherings with his family in Durham.
Phil was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ann Kray and is survived by his sister Ellie Mayer; brother Vic Kray (JoAnn); niece Christine Mayer-Patel (Ketan) and children Sejal and Darshan; nephew Alex Mayer (Sannie) and children Jonah and Robyn; brother-in-law Joe Mayer; sisters-in-law Jill Mayer and Lorraine Gaasche; niece Melissa Turkel (Adam) and daughter Evelyn; niece Julie Rombach (Don) and children Chloe and Josh; niece Laura Kray; and niece Victoria Kray.
The family expresses its sincere thanks to his family at Spring Arbor of Durham for their eight years of loving care and support, to Dr. Barbara Bergdolt for her many years of medical care, and to the volunteers at Holy Infant Catholic Church for ministering to his spiritual needs.
A private service is planned.
