Tye and Wanda Hunter: Fury for fuel

Fury for fuel

We read with incredulity the June 23 Point of View piece by N.C. Republican Party Chairman Claude Pope, who continued to repeat the tea party fiction that the citizen protests occurring in Raleigh are “manufactured and fueled by folks who do not reside in North Carolina.”

The chairman claimed as “proof” of this fiction quotes from the Rev. William Barber, Tim Tyson, Dana Cope and George Gresham. None of the quotes even remotely supports his claim. In fact, the information available from all news sources and even the conservative Civitas Institute shows that participants in Moral Monday protests are overwhelmingly from North Carolina.

Further, the “fuel” for the protests comes not from out of state but from North Carolinians’ righteous indignation at a governor and legislature determined to impoverish poor and middle-class citizens in order to enrich a few, including themselves.
