Constance Miller Sweeney

July 10, 2013

Mrs. Constance Miller Sweeney passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 6, 2013, after a brief hospitalization in Wilmington, NC while on vacation at her home on Topsail Island. Connie, as she is known to her many friends and family, was born in Ridley Park, PA, the daughter of Anthony Joseph Miller and Edith Valleau Miller. A graduate of Women’s College (now known as UNC-G), Connie was a resident of Raleigh almost her entire adult life. Predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years, Dr. Charles Leslie Sweeney, Jr., she is survived by her brother James V. Miller; son Brian A. Sweeney of Newport, RI; son Craig L. Sweeney of Chesapeake, Virginia, his wife, and their three sons Tyler, Colin, and Brice Sweeney; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved Jack Russell terrier, Gracie. Connie enjoyed life to its fullest, through the last week of her life. She surrounded herself with her family and her friends, young and old, and she was unconditionally devoted to them all. Her sudden passing leaves a hole in all of their hearts. She was a longstanding and active member of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh, and prior to that a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church (where she served as Senior Ward) and St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. In addition to her dedication to her faith and her church, Connie was generous with her time, being active in numerous charitable organizations including serving on the boards of the Salvation Army of Wake County, the Penick Home in Southern Pines, and the Thompson Children’s Home; was a regular volunteer at Meals on Wheels; a member of the Pinewood Garden Club and Wake County Medical Auxiliary; and volunteered in numerous local and civic organizations. Connie loved her vacation home on Topsail Island where she spent a great deal of time, enjoying the company of family and friends at the beach and on the water. Connie Sweeney will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but they know that she has joined her husband Les in the company of our Lord, Jesus Christ. A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 11, 2013 @ 2:00 pm at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 125 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to either the Salvation Army of Wake County or The Healing Place of Wake County. Arrangements by Renaissance Funeral Home www.rfhr.com
