Charles Kithcart is a visionary who deserves all the support he can get for celebrating North Carolina’s substantial sailing heritage on our waterways, lakes, rivers, oceans and sounds. Camps Seagull and Seafarer train our young people in the art and science of sailing. Raleigh’s legendary Bill Myatt equipped Flying Scot sailors for regattas at Oriental. The Carolina Yacht Club at Wrightsville Beach is America’s second-oldest yacht club. Duke University provides a course in Literature of the Sea as outreach to coastal communities.
It is high time an African-American team is allowed the opportunity to compete in this premier sailing race, and I am glad North Carolina can claim credit for promoting the effort.
