July 14, 2013

Clarice Barnes passed away on July 13, 2013 at the age of 99. Ms. Barnes was the fifth child of eight children born to the late Chester Linden Barnes and Ida Liles Barnes of Archer Lodge.

Ms. Barnes graduated from Archer Lodge School and East Carolina University prior to beginning her teaching career at a school in Meadow. After one year in Meadow, Ms. Barnes taught first grade at Four Oaks Elementary for 38 years where she was able to touch many tiny hands and fulfill her passion for teaching. A true lady of wisdom and compassion, Ms. Barnes was always a giver of her time. Besides teaching, Ms. Barnes was an avid reader, a gardener and a master of needlepoint.

Ms. Barnes returned to her home place of Archer Lodge, where she enjoyed being surrounded by her family and living in the house that her father, Chester Barnes, built. With declining health, she moved to Meadow View Assisted Living where she was happy with her adopted family. Ms. Barnes is survived by her only living sibling Harold (Jake) Barnes, niece Donna Parrish and husband David Parrish, great niece Laura Parrish, great niece Suzanne Walker and husband Jonathan Walker along with a great-great nephew, James Gregory Walker, and Great-Great niece, Charlotte Grace Walker and many other nieces and nephews.

A special praise to her sitters for holding her hand each day and providing love and support. Our family gives a special thanks to Meadow View Assisted Living and SECU Hospice House of Smithfield for their excellent care.
