Hockey in July

Summer is the saddest season for local hockey fans, but at least we have the Hurricanes Summerfest at PNC Arena. Highlights include the final practice of the prospects development camp, autograph sessions, a slap-shot booth and various games and special guests. No fighting!

10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday; PNC Arena, 1400 Edwards Mill Rd., Raleigh; hurricanes.nhl.com

Slimy things

As part of its Eco-Explorers series for kids, the Stevens Nature Center at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve presents the special program "Snakes, Spiders and Slugs." It’s all there in the title, isn’t it?

10 a.m.-noon Saturday; 2616 Kildaire Farm Rd., Cary; townofcary.org

Russian dance

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the World War II Battle of Kursk, Cambridge Village in Apex will host a Russian Music and Dance Festival with performers on tour from St. Petersburg and Georgia. That’s Georgia as in Tbilisi, not Savannah.

3:30 p.m. Tuesday; 951 S. Hughes St., Apex; cambridgevillageofapex.com

Monkey see ...

The children’s musical band Recess Monkey (sound it out) returns to Carrboro’s ArtsCenter with a repertoire of sing-along songs about superheroes, space and the circus. Can’t argue with that.

11 a.m. Saturday; 300-G E. Main St., Carrboro; $9; artscenterlive.org

Classic cars

The Cary Veterans of Foreign Wars will host the 4th Annual Custom Car and Motorcycle Show, with live music, a silent auction, local crafts and Carolina BBQ. All proceeds go to VFW support programs.

10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday; 522 Reedy Creek Rd., Cary; caryvfw.org
